'Check-In, Check-Out'

Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2013

I'm taking this opportunity to talk about something I've been seeing everywhere recently and that's Vuitton's 'Check-In, Check-Out' s/s 2013 collection. The Creative Director was not only the brilliant Marc Jacobs, of course.

The show was set in a tent in the grounds of The Louvre and featured four towering escalators which led down onto a glossy runway of neon yellow checkers. It seemed that the show was trying to replicate some sort of department store and it certainly seemed that way when models descended the runway in straight neat pairs.

'The ‘twins’, with their hair sculpted into modern beehives secured with a white bowed Alice band, and their shoes, patent pointy-toed midi-heels, were straight out of the 1960s – a seamless continuation of the designer’s eponymous show, presented in New York three weeks ago.

The only interruption of checks – which came in the most microscopic sequins that appeared as liquid glistening evening looks  – was an abstract flower print in yellow, grey or white.' - Elle UK

The staging was it's pinnacle point for me. The reason why I loved the staging so much was the discordance and disharmony between the yellow of the checks on it and the garments themselves. I absolutely adored the contrast which made it so hard to watch yet you couldn't pull your eyes away.

My favourite look of the collection was the brown coat on the left of the image on the right. I liked the way it looked chic and sophisticated. The sort of jacket you'd see on a younger girl walking her two young puppies in Central Park. The other outfit I liked was the second one in on the photograph of the six models. I adore the way the tiny crop top was paired with a long skirt in the same checked pattern. I think this is because the garments shape were completely opposite of each other. One was incredibly revealing while the other didn't show any sign of doing so. The clash of this was pulled off perfectly.

Although I did adore those pieces in particular, I was overall not extremely impressed with this collection. Personally, I did not really feel anything towards the collection. No emotions. Nothing. I wasn't really wowed even though I did adore the stage. I designed a similar dress at school last year for my textiles class so this show was slightly personal with me. Mine featured black and white checkers as my theme was 1960s. I love the concept behind using checkers; I just thought it could've been done in a more imaginative way this season. Especially as there last S/S show in 2012 was completely original and unique (see right) centred around the carousel where models wore candy coloured clothing inspiring last years pastel craze.

Cambridge Satchel Company

I think I've fallen in love with these little beauties from the Cambridge Satchel Company. If only I had all the money in the world then I'd be grabbing these straight away. I think it's because of the clever mix between a vintage satchel and bright quirky colours. The fact that it's a British company, just makes everything 1000% better. I love when I see British companies and designers like this. Even for me, someone who has dreamed of living in New York all of their life. Moments like this make me proud to be a Brit. I'm not even sure which colour I love the most.

Which ones do you guys think (if you're even reading this hehehe)?

The Topshop Outfit

My first outfit post and I've decided I'd just show what I'd been trying on from my latest purchases from Topshop.

I got all of these items when I went to the shopping centre with my mum this easter holidays.

So currently, I really like the idea of mixing prints and putting block colours with patterns. I'm also hugely into neons this season such as lime and fuchsia.

I'm planning to wear this outfit someplace nice like a meal but there isn't any coming up so for now, I guess it'll have to hibernate in my closet. Also I can't decide whether I prefer having the skirt as a pencil skirt or whether I prefer the skirt being pulled up so that it turns into a short skirt underneath the top.

(Apologies for the weird posing I seem to have adapted. You may have to get used to that)

'Widows of Culloden'

Alexander McQueen - Fall 2006

So here I go, my first proper blog post. I've decided that I will discuss my opinions and knowledge on Alexander McQueen's Fall 2006 range thus giving me a chance to research more about him and into one of my favourite (if not my favourite) collections of his.

Lee Alexander McQueen was very much inspired by nature which is particularly noticeable in this collection. Lee created some of his other garments using python lace, as well as other hides and leathers in addition to gazelle horns. He once stated “Not so PC, but there’s nothing better than nature. Nature is a fabric itself.” Many thought this was due to his love of the fact that nature is unpredictable and that you could never quite tell what was going to happen next. Perhaps that is what he was trying to express through his garments by shocking and tricking the audience into different emotions.

On the right hand side is an image of  the ivory silk organza dress which was possibly my favourite of the collection due to it's raw beauty and sheer magnificence in detail and elegance.

The end of the runway show took the audience by surprise when a life sized hologram of the iconic Kate Moss formed from white light. The theme song from Schindler’s List by Itzhak Perlman was played in the background making it appear additionally ever more haunting, mesmerising and tragic as the audience were allowed to make their own minds up as to the story (which Alexander McQueen often does) of the girl trapped inside of a hologram.
Check out the hologram of Kate here

What Lee had to say about his Fall 2006 Collection:

"I’m an avid follower of the news, and sometimes you just can’t take any more war, any more disaster, and you want to remind yourself there’s beauty in the world. With this collection I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work. It was all about a feeling of sadness, but in a cinematic kind of way. I find beauty in melancholy."

Hello everybody! (although I'm not sure anyone is reading this)

This is my first blog post even though I've had this account for almost two years.
I'm aiming to use this blog to mainly write about fashion, designers and models such as Vogue, Alexander McQueen and Daphne Groeneveld. I will also post my outfits, maybe write and tell you more about me. I love helping and talking to people which is partly due to my massive interest into psychology (I may post on that too.)

I'm basically making this page as a way to learn and research more about fashion and with luck, you'll like my blog, follow and learn more too.

That's all I'm going to say for this post so if you're reading then I hope you're having a lovely day
